UberVoonderKool Post Event Writeup!
Funky paper-mache statuettes and striking tablecloths greeted unsuspecting parishioners who found themselves in the OLPS canteen on the evening of Saturday 27th December, as members of the various OLPS Youth Ministry groups were out in full force preparing for our UberVoonderKool Christmas party. Members of the Ministry Of Expression (MOE) were responsible for the unique décor, which drew looks of curiosity and bemusement from passers-through. Indeed, interest was piqued even before colour was introduced, when senior parishioners spotted the Youth Music Ministry (YMM) setting up music equipment in the afternoon and made enquiries about attending the festivities.
The party itself kicked off after the 6.30pm Mass concluded, with David Cheong of MOE saying an opening prayer to commence dinner and the event. With the colourful tables now complemented by an appetizing potluck of food provided by Youth Arise Ministry (YAM) and Mentors, as well as guests from outside of Ministry, no one needed to be asked twice to indulge in our nation’s favourite festive pastime – eating! While dining, a video showing a recap of the activities of OLPS Youth Ministry through the last two years was screened. It allowed all to reminisce fondly on good memories from our time together, as well as giving an insight to non-Ministry party guests, such as teens from the Confirmation 3 level and parents of Ministry members, on what we do as a Ministry.
YMM took to the stage next, excited at the chance to perform a set of songs from outside their usual repertoire of praise & worship and Mass music, to rapturous applause from the crowd. Genesis then facilitated party games, which helped to foster fellowship among the youths present, before an entertaining short film was presented by the Altar Servers. The film, titled “Leng Leng Chat & The Foreclosure Of Solace”, left all in stitches and displayed a light-hearted and talented side to the Servers which not all parishioners may have had fortune to see. Desserts were served shortly after, while members of the Youth Committee, who wish to otherwise remain anonymous, performed an a capella medley of pop hits from across the years as a treat for all friends gathered. The evening was brought to a boisterous close with Christmas carols, led by Genesis, as the year-end cheer of OLPS youths echoed around the church canteen.
UberVoonderKool was the culmination of a fulfilling year of activities for OLPS Youth Ministry, doing well in line with the Ministry’s vision for 2008, which was to Strengthen Bonds. Mates from across all the Ministry groups were left with smiles on their faces long after we were done with the clean-up, each content with their own contribution to the successful party and proud of the diverse contributions of others. It is with this high spirit that we look forward to 2009, and all that it brings us!
